Is acupuncture treatment used alone or in adjunct to other treatment methods?

In some minor conditions, acupuncture treatment is used as a primary form of Medicine and is proved to be efficient.

However, in some complex cases, the use of a singular approach is not enough. Acupuncture, a Chinese form of treatment, can be combined to several other forms of Medicine of our western world in order to provide relief.

Acupuncture can be integrated to:

  • Conventional medications

  • Physiotherapy

  • Psychotherapy and stress management

  • Diet program

  • Behavioral therapy

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is not painful because the needles used are very thin, like a hair and don’t have sharp end like the ones used for regular injections. But, generally the feeling is more of a tingling. During the session, a feeling of heaviness or heat or something moving may be described. Following treatment, it is common for the patient to feel a tremendous sense of relaxation, and/or exhilaration.

Are there any side effects or complications after acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an extremely safe method of treatment, and as such, side effects and complications are extremely rare when treated by an experienced, licensed practitioner. However, a small number of patients do have reactions to the procedure which may include nausea, lightheadedness and fainting. (As in any matter pertaining to health, any concerns should be discussed with the practitioner prior to treatment and following treatment to ensure maximum effectiveness.)

The needles used are sterile disposable needles, so the risk of infection is eliminated.

What is acupuncture’s session duration?

The initial evaluation may take up to 60 minutes. Subsequent appointments usually take about a half-hour.

What is the number of acupuncture sessions required?

A common treatment plan for a single complaint would typically involve 6 to 12 treatments, scheduled over a few months. However, the number of sessions may vary according to the severity and chronicity of the disease.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

The answer is no. You don’t have to believe in acupuncture for it to work. Besides the studies done on non-believers, many studies have shown results on children and animals. Meanwhile, having a positive attitude towards any treatment enhances the chances of its success.
